Product Stickiness

The DAU/MAU ratio that tells you if users return because they want to — or because they've become Gollum about it.

Product Stickiness, expressed as DAU ÷ MAU × 100%, answers the question: "Of the users who touched the product this month, how many came back on any given day?" A DAU/MAU ratio of 50% means that half of monthly active users use the product on any given day — a high-stickiness signal. Consumer social products routinely target 60-70% DAU/MAU. B2B software products with strong daily use cases (Slack, Notion, Figma) achieve 40-60%. Purpose-built tools with weekly or monthly natural use rhythms might have 10-20% DAU/MAU by design — the benchmark varies enormously by product category. The key is tracking the ratio over time: declining DAU/MAU within a product that should have daily use patterns suggests engagement is softening even if MAU appears stable.

Stickiness is often the distinguishing factor between products that customers merely tolerate and products they would miss. A sticky product has been integrated into users' daily habits and workflows — it's the tool they open first thing in the morning, the platform they return to multiple times per day, the software they'd feel lost without. Sticky products churn at dramatically lower rates because the switching cost is not just the price of the subscription but the disruption of established daily workflows. Building stickiness requires that the product delivers consistent, reliable value in use cases that recur daily — not just impressive onboarding demos.

For B2B product and content teams, stickiness reveals what kind of content investments will have the highest retention impact. If a product has low DAU/MAU in a category where daily use should be natural, the cause is usually that users don't know how to use the product for the daily use cases it's designed for — an education and content problem. Tutorial videos covering daily use workflows, "tip of the week" video series highlighting features users overlook, and quick-start guides for new daily habits are content investments that directly address stickiness. The metric is measurable: cohorts that engage with daily-habit content show measurable improvements in DAU/MAU within 30-60 days.
