Daily Active Users (DAU)
How many wizards entered Hogwarts today — the daily attendance register of your product's engaged population.
Daily Active Users (DAU) counts the number of distinct user accounts that perform at least one meaningful action within a product on a given calendar day. The definition of "active" is product-specific — logging in alone rarely qualifies; the trigger is typically a core action that reflects genuine product engagement (sending a message, completing a task, publishing content, running a query). DAU is most meaningful for products with natural daily use cases: communication tools, productivity software, and consumer applications where users return every day by design. For tools used weekly or monthly by nature (monthly billing software, quarterly planning tools), DAU is less meaningful than weekly or monthly engagement metrics.
DAU is the most real-time signal of product health, but should be interpreted in context. A single day's DAU can fluctuate significantly due to weekday vs. weekend patterns, holidays, product outages, or viral moments. The meaningful signal is DAU trend over time — week-over-week and month-over-month growth, stability, or decline — and DAU/MAU ratio (product stickiness), which normalizes daily activity against the monthly active base. Growing DAU with a stable or improving DAU/MAU ratio indicates genuine product adoption; growing MAU with declining DAU/MAU indicates new user acquisition without sustained engagement.
For B2B product and content teams, DAU is the early warning system for product adoption health. If DAU among a newly onboarded customer segment is declining in the first 30 days, it's an early signal of poor activation or onboarding failure — visible before churn signals appear in the data. Onboarding video sequences that drive users back to the product daily in the first two weeks (by giving them specific, valuable tasks to complete) directly improve DAU among new cohorts, and the downstream impact on 90-day retention can be measured by comparing DAU trajectories between cohorts with and without video onboarding engagement.
