Luma
The brightness thread — the Elvish signal your monitor uses to decide how much light exists in any pixel.
Luma (short for luminance) is the brightness component of a video signal — a measure of how light or dark each pixel is, expressed independently from its color. In the YCbCr color model used by digital video (where Y = luma, Cb = blue-difference chroma, Cr = red-difference chroma), luma is the primary carrier of image detail. The human visual system is more sensitive to brightness differences than to color differences, which is why compressing or encoding chroma (color) more aggressively than luma has a smaller perceptual impact on image quality.
Luma is what you see when you convert a color image to black and white — it's the grayscale information that defines the structure, contrast, and tonal range of the image. In color grading, luma control is the foundation of all other adjustments. The Lift, Gamma, and Gain controls in professional grading tools adjust luma in different tonal ranges: Lift raises or lowers the dark tones (shadows), Gamma adjusts the midtones, and Gain adjusts the bright tones (highlights). The waveform monitor used by colorists displays luma values across the frame horizontally, allowing precise measurement of exposure levels and the detection of clipped highlights or crushed shadows.
For video producers, maintaining correct luma levels throughout a project is both a technical and creative concern. Technically, luma levels outside the legal broadcast range (typically 16–235 in an 8-bit signal, corresponding to black and peak white) can cause issues in distribution platforms and broadcast systems that clip or adjust video outside those boundaries. Creatively, the luma distribution determines the overall brightness and contrast "feel" of a video — whether it reads as high-key and bright, or moody and dark. Getting luma right in color correction creates a stable foundation for any creative color treatment applied on top.
