Hue
The dial between Rivendell blue and Mordor orange — pure mood, no logic required.
Hue is one of the three fundamental properties that describe color — the other two being saturation (intensity or purity of the color) and value/luminance (brightness). Hue describes the pure chromatic identity of a color: where it sits on the color wheel. Red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and purple are all distinct hues. Moving around the color wheel changes the hue continuously — from red toward orange, then yellow, then green, then blue, then purple, then back to red. Hue is independent of how bright or pale a color is: a pale pastel pink and a deep fire-engine red can share the same hue (red) while differing dramatically in saturation and brightness.
In color grading tools, hue is one of the primary targets for selective adjustment. Hue vs. saturation, hue vs. luminance, and hue vs. hue curves allow colorists to isolate a specific color range in the image and shift it in hue, saturation, or brightness without affecting the rest of the frame. A common use: shifting skin tones from orange (a common outcome of tungsten lighting on certain skin types) toward a more neutral or warm-pink direction, without changing the sky, foliage, or product colors in the same frame. This precision is what separates professional color grading from basic Instagram-filter-style adjustments.
For video producers without a dedicated colorist, understanding hue shifts at the basic level means understanding why footage shot in different lighting conditions looks "off" — an indoor warm-cast image has skin tones skewing orange, a shade-lit outdoor scene has skin tones skewing blue or cyan. In post-production, the primary correction for these issues is adjusting the white balance (which shifts overall hue) and then fine-tuning secondary hue adjustments to bring specific colors into alignment. The goal is typically "true" hue rendition — colors that match what the eye would have perceived on location.
