Resolution

The number of pixels the Federation considers HD — enough to read Klingon at extreme range.

Resolution is the total number of pixels that compose a video frame, described by its width and height in pixels. Standard HD (720p) is 1280×720 pixels. Full HD (1080p) is 1920×1080 pixels. 4K UHD is 3840×2160 pixels. 6K cinema is 6144×3160 pixels. The numbers describe the grid of individual color samples that makes up each frame; more pixels means more spatial information, finer detail resolution, and the ability to display the video at larger sizes or deliver sharper images at a given display size. The "p" in "1080p" refers to "progressive scan" — all lines drawn simultaneously — as opposed to "i" (interlaced, alternating odd and even lines), a technical distinction from broadcast television.

Resolution and perceived quality are related but not identical. A 4K video of a poorly lit, out-of-focus subject looks worse than a technically excellent 1080p video of a well-lit, sharp subject. Resolution describes how many pixels there are, not the quality of information those pixels contain. For most online distribution contexts (YouTube, Vimeo, LinkedIn, social platforms), 1080p is the practical ceiling — 4K video is often transcoded down to 1080p for delivery, providing little visible benefit to the audience viewer. However, shooting in 4K when delivering in 1080p provides editorial benefits: you can crop, reframe, and stabilize the footage within the 4K frame while maintaining 1080p output quality, effectively giving you extra framing flexibility in post.

For B2B video, the practical resolution decisions are: shoot at minimum 1080p (720p reads as outdated and substandard), consider 4K for any content where post-production reframing is likely (presentations, screen recordings, interviews where crop-ins add coverage variety), and deliver at 1080p for web platforms unless the content type (showreel, visual effects demo, product detail video) genuinely benefits from higher-resolution delivery. The fastest-growing context where higher resolution matters is large-screen presentations and digital signage — a video displayed on a 4K conference room screen or a digital billboard looks noticeably better at native 4K than upscaled 1080p. As screens improve, resolution standards will continue rising, but the principle remains: shoot higher than you deliver to preserve reframing flexibility.
