Dutch Angle

A Dutch angle — also called a Dutch tilt or canted angle — is a camera technique in which the camera is rotated sideways along its lens axis, causing the horizontal and vertical lines in the frame to appear diagonal rather than level. The image is tilted, as if the world itself is off-balance. Unlike a pan (horizontal rotation) or a tilt (vertical rotation), the Dutch angle is a roll of the camera, which changes the orientation of the frame without changing the camera's position or the direction it's pointing.
The Dutch angle has a long history as a shorthand for psychological unease. German Expressionist cinema of the 1920s popularized the technique to suggest moral corruption, disorientation, and threat — and the "Dutch" in the name derives from "Deutsch" (German), reflecting that origin. Horror and thriller filmmakers have used the Dutch angle for decades to signal that something is wrong, a character is unstable, or the world has become unsafe. The viewer's body physically responds to a tilted horizon as disequilibrium; the brain registers the tilt as a sign that something is off.
In modern usage, the Dutch angle has become a somewhat self-aware stylistic choice, used deliberately in genre content, music videos, and action sequences where heightened stylization is the intent. Overusing it undermines the effect — if every shot in a video is tilted, the tilt loses its meaning and just looks like the camera operator was tired. For B2B and corporate video, Dutch angles are rarely appropriate outside of deliberately stylized creative campaigns. The convention for professional business content is level, stable framing that conveys competence and control — the exact opposite of what the Dutch angle communicates.
