Boom Mic / Boom Pole
The One Mic to capture them all — hung just above frame, hearing everything.
A boom microphone is a highly directional microphone — typically a shotgun mic — mounted at the end of an extendable boom pole. The boom operator holds the pole above (or occasionally below) the subjects being filmed, positioning the mic as close to their mouth as physically possible without entering the camera frame. This proximity dramatically improves audio quality compared to a camera-mounted mic: the sound is cleaner, richer, and more isolated from background noise because the mic is just a foot or two away from the sound source rather than across the room.
The shotgun mic used on a boom pole works through a combination of directionality and interference tube design that rejects sound coming from the sides and emphasizes sound from directly in front of the mic. This makes it excellent for capturing a specific speaker in a noisy environment. The boom operator's job is as much about movement as positioning — they must track subjects as they move, adjust for different speakers, keep the pole steady to avoid handling noise, and watch a monitor to ensure the mic stays out of frame at all times.
For corporate and B2B video shoots with multiple people on camera, a boom mic is often the preferred choice over lavalier (lapel) microphones. Lav mics require rigging on each individual — time-consuming in multi-person setups — and can pick up clothing rustle. A skilled boom operator can capture clean audio from two or three subjects with a single mic by swinging between speakers. The trade-off is crew cost: boom operation requires a dedicated sound person, which adds to production complexity. For solo presenter content or remote recording, a lavalier or desktop condenser mic is a practical substitute.
