Editors handle ambient sound in several ways. The most important is recording room tone — 30 to 60 seconds of the ambient sound of a location with everyone quiet — so it can be used to fill gaps in the edit or smooth transitions between cuts. If ambient sound changes dramatically between shots in the same scene, the resulting audio edit will sound jarring. A consistent ambient bed, either from room tone or carefully mixed environmental sound, is what keeps a video feeling coherent and professionally produced.
